Refer to proper ASME code Section I or Section VIII

Pressure Setting Points

ASME Code stipulates that the pressure setting of a safety relief valve does not exceed 10 PSIG or 20% of the operating pressure of the system or vessel.

Capacity Guidelines

ASME Code - Section I
The total relieving capacity of the valve shall not be less than the maximum operating pressure of the vessel of line; as designed by the manufacturer.

ASME Code - Section VIlI
Minimum relieving capacity shall discharge the total maximum amount of the system without a rise in the pressure vessel in the event of overpowering the system or lines operating pressure.

About Sizing

It is important to not oversize a relief valve. Typically, this will result in valve chatter or rapid opening and closing of the valve seating and disk. If Chattering is present, it could be more economical to use two valves. For ASME calculations or further information, please contact Aquatrol.
